Best Arizona Active Adult Communities for Bicycling

I noticed a few themes in the book Younger Next Year… one being STAY ACTIVE.

Not the P90X active, rather get moving and stay moving.

A bike ride is a great way to get your heart pumping.  In the Active Adult Communities, you will see lots of people headed up to the recreation center on their bikes, many of the communities have bicycle paths in and around the community as well.  Making the 55+ communities a great place to get on your bike and get moving.

A few of the Best communities with additional bike paths and trails close by…

Trilogy at Vistancia in Peoria has bicycle friendly streets and the Discovery Trail a 3.5 mile paved nature trail system meandering thru the Master Planned  Community of Vistancia.

Heritage Village IV in Scottsdale is close to the Camelback Walk, a paved multi use path along the parks and golf courses in Scottsdale.

The City of Gilbert is utilizing the natural washes for bicycle and walking paths, and are easily accessed from Trilogy at Power Ranch.

Trilogy at Verde River   Rio Verde and Tonto Verde  are right around the corner from McDowell Mountain Regional Park, where 15 miles of mountain bike trails await, trails are marked for beginner up to expert.  This is a popular location for mountain bike racing too!

MountainBrook Village in Gold Canyon is close to several different mountain bike trails, most with some hilly terrain.

The Best Arizona Active Adult Communities with Mountain Views

Views from Trilogy at Verde River

There is something more than majestic to mountain views.  They draw us to them like any aspect of nature.  They help us stay calm, focused and centered.  It is not surprising that people love a home that has a beautiful view of the Mountains.

The challenge is building homes on a hillside is much costlier than building on flat land.

Most of the Phoenix area Valley of the Sun is flat as well.  We do have Mountains surrounding the city.   Where will you have the best chance of having magnificent Mountain Views?  In the communities closest to the biggest mountains.

The most significant mountains in the area are to the north and east of Phoenix; Tonto National Forrest, and Superstition Mountains.  There are a few other notable mountains scattered around as well.

In the northeast, the views of Tonto Nationa Forrest and McDowell Mountains from Rio Verde, Tonto Verde and Trilogy at Verde River are truly spectacular. Then I would head to Trilogy at Wickenburg Ranch, the terraced lots have created amazing views from many of the home sites.  Heading out to Gold Canyon the views of the Superstitions are awesome at Mountain Brook Village.  Next on my list would be to the north of Tucson the SaddleBrook Communities with views of the Catalina’s.

This next group have fewer homes with mountain views, but views are available.  I then would go to Canta Mia next to the Estrella Mountain Regional Park, and Sun City Festival with views of the White Tank Mountains.  Lastly I include Solera at Jonson Ranch located next to the San Tan Mountains.

8 Best Arizona Active Adult Communities to get out and ride your Motorcycle

The main factor in picking these communities was how quickly you could ride out of the city traffic, and get into some delightful small, and scenic roads.  That means most of these communities are on the outer edges of the city.

Communities out to the east Mountainbrook Village, Sunland Springs Village and Encore at Eastmark are so close to the Superstition Mountains it won’t be long before your itching to get out on the open road.

Headed across the Valley and over to the north west, I think Sun City Festival, Sun City Grand, Arizona Traditions, and Trilogy at Vistancia will give you an opportunity to head out on the 60 toward Wickenburg or around the White Tank Mountains to go exploring.

While mentioning Wickenburg, I have to add in Trilogy at Wickenburg Ranch.  You are already out of the ‘big city’ and you can head out on the open road in any direction without Phoenix’s highways.

Living in an Active Adult Community could qualify you for Insurance discounts

Talking with a Farmers Insurance Agent, I discovered there are discounts for most of the Active Adult Communities in the Greater Phoenix Valley. Call your agent, or Barb for more information on getting your discounts.

6 Best Arizona Active Adult Communities for Indoor Pools

Indoor Pool at Sun City Grand. Can you see people on the walking track upstairs?

If you like to swim for exercise, you probably don’t want to always do it outside in our blazing sun, or exit the pool with our cool mornings during the winter months.  Indoor pools allow for consistent temperatures of the air and water limiting the excuses and increasing your swim time.  For this best of list, I have included communities with Olympic sized pools, with a sloped walk in beach style entry and an exercise first lane.  Allowing for multiple swimmers lanes, and a fabulous pool for any injury recovery physical therapy as well.

You are primarily going to find indoor Olympic sized pools in larger communities.  Del Webb is the leader in this best of list.  Their new community Sun City Festival has an Olympic Lap Pool connected to the resort pool.  Maybe in the second Clubhouse there will be an Olympic indoor pool too.

The top 6 Arizona Active Adult Communities with Resort Pools

Resort Pool at Trilogy Wickenburg Ranch

If you love to relax around a beautiful pool then these communities should be at the top of your list.  All of these communities have stunning resort feeling pools.  Each pool has a gentle sloped beach entry.  There is plenty of shade available to relax and enjoy your time around the resort pool.  Loades of lounging chairs and restaurant and/or bar service.

If you are looking to experience every day as a vacation day, then checkout these communities.

Shea Homes has figured out the Resort Pool experience with 4 communities on this list.

Why should I consider a Reverse Mortgage?

A reverse mortgage, also called a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM), uses the equity you already have in your home to re-finance and eliminate your mortgage payment; for as long as you (and your spouse) live in your home.  It also lets you purchase a home by letting you access some of the homes value to never have a mortgage payment again.  This loan requires one person to be a min of 62 years of age.  It can create financial comfort and ease by eliminating the worry of home mortgage payments.

Retirement Isn’t Boring – Forward

One of my fabulous clients wrote this piece that I used as the forward of my book, Retirement Ins’t Boring, When you live in an Active Adult Community.

Buying a new home can be a daunting task. It is one of the biggest financial decisions you will make in your lifetime. The anxiety of making such a large investment as you move into the retirement years creates even more intensity.  You become overwhelmed by the multiple options of making your final “dream home” become a reality.  Choosing the right realtor makes these decisions less stressful and more of an adventure.

Irene Hammond was our “adventure” leader.  She was an expert in finding our “dream home” in a retirement community.  She gathered information on our “wants” and “needs” and began looking at matches for our criteria.   She knew the Active Adult Communities well, which helped us narrow our search.  We appreciated her honesty and willingness to tell us if something that caught our eye would not be a good fit for us.  This helped avoid mistakes we might have made on our own.  This was particularly critical since we were moving from the Midwest to the Southwest.  Even her “yes, no, maybe” answers were helpful in making decisions and narrowing our search.  When our new home sales person commented, “She really knows her stuff” we were even more assured that Irene was keeping our best interests at the forefront. Her knowledge of resale and newly built homes was especially helpful.  We looked at both options in our search.  When we ended up buying a newly constructed home she was able to walk through the home and point out things we needed to have completed prior to signing off.  We are grateful that we were able to access her expertise to find exactly what we wanted in a community as well as a new home.

Reading this book will allow you to learn from an expert.  Best wishes as you join Irene on your adventure to find your dream home/community.

Trilogy at Wickenburg Ranch

Trilogy at Wickenburg Ranch is located to the north west of the greater Phoenix Valley of the Sun in the town of Wickenburg.  Wickenburg is a true western town known for being the Roping Capital of Arizona and maybe even the country.  It has a year round population of 7000 doubling in the winter months.

Trilogy at Wickenburg Ranch offers open land behind or abutting approximately 90% of the homesites. If your looking for beautiful mountain views you have come to the right location.  Due to the hillier terrain  they have terraced most of the community offering fabulous views of the surrounding mountains for not just a few but the majority of homes.

Like the other Trilogy communities, Wickenburg Ranch is a resort community.  With the Alvea Spa, Big Wick and Li’l Wick golf, 20 miles of trails the 40,000 square foot indoor and outdoor clubhouse and much more.  One of the unique elements of the community is the Solstice Park,  sunken sitting area to enhance the dark night skies of Wickenburg with a state of the art digital telescope for ultimate star gazing.

This Trilogy community is part of Shea homes Active Lifestyle Communities, not age restrictive.  Families are welcome to live in this community.  There has been discussion about the builder doing a section of the community as strictly 55+ but at this time it hasn’t been established.

Great news, as of January 2018 Wickenburg Ranch is opening a 55+ neighborhood. This section of the community will be age restrictive, while the remainder of the community will be open for anyone looking to enjoy the views and lifestyle.

Encore at Eastmark

Senior Couple Putting On In Line Skates In Park

Located in the southeast valley on the site of the former General Motors Proving Ground is the new master planned community of Eastmark.

Nine builders are developing the project, each builder offering several home styles and price ranges. Parks and playgrounds abound.   This plan of situating an Active Adult community within a larger Master Planned community is a popular one.

It allows the younger families their schools and playgrounds and ball fields, while grandparents can be nearby but enjoy their privacy, quiet and separate adult activities.   AV Homes are presenting their 55+ community “Encore at Eastmark”  on the southern edge of the property with views of the Superstition Mountains.  The connections to the main freeways are within a few miles creating a desirable location for the Active Adult who is working in the valley.  The majority of new homeowners in Encore are moving to the community from the nearby towns of Gilbert, Chandler and Mesa. Currently there is a higher ratio of year round residents than other Active Adult Communities.

Encore residents will have their own facilities and will share the Mesa City Park amenities with the Eastmark families.  The proximity of Mesa-Gateway airport offers connections to many western cities.  Encore is a lovely community with many contributing factors to facilitate the 55+ Active Adults move into a fun filled retirement.

Currently there are no resale homes in this community
